During his tenure, he spent six years as a K9 officer alongside his K9 partner, Ivar. Officer Deering held multiple roles, including Patrol Officer, Narcotics Detective, Field Training Officer, Sergeant, and Training & Development Coordinator. After completing his education, he honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps before joining the Durant Police Department. He was first elected as Bryan County Sheriff in 2016 and was re-elected in 2020 and 2024. Before that, he served 25 years with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, earning the Physical Fitness Award and the Trooper of the Year honor for saving an infant’s life. Investigator Wainscott had served with the Grayson County Sheriff's Office for 16 years. He had also served with the Van Alstyne Police Department and Pottsboro Police Department. He began his law enforcement career as a patrol officer at the Gainesville Police Department for over four years. Prior to this, he served as the U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Texas and as a U.S. Probation Officer. In 2012, Sheriff Gary received the Texas Peacemakers Award from the Sheriff’s Association of Texas. He also received the U.S. Marshal Service Director’s Special Achievement Award for outstanding efforts in the recruitment of women and minorities. He and another trooper were investigating a wreck involving a semi-truck on westbound I-40 at approximately 10:00 pm when a vehicle went around their patrol cars before striking both troopers. Trooper Dees died at the scene. Trooper Dees had served with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for approximately 18 months. Corporal Lamance and his brother, who was a reserve officer with the same agency, were on patrol when they spotted the suspect and attempted to pull him over. During the pursuit, the suspect led the officers into a field and stopped his vehicle approximately 100 yards away from the cruiser. The suspect then exited the vehicle and opened fire on the officers, striking Corporal Lamance. Corporal Lamance's brother was able to return fire but did not strike the suspect, who was arrested later in the night at his residence. The suspect was acquitted of the capital murder charged in April, 2002. Corporal Lamance had been employed with the Whitewright Police Department for 3 years. The driver who struck him failed to stop but was arrested a short distance away. The subject was a habitual drunk driver who was out on bond on a previous drunk driving arrest. The subject was convicted of felony murder and aggravated assault. He was subsequently sentenced to 141 years in prison but is eligible for parole in 30 years. Deputy Key had served as a corrections officer with the Grayson County Sheriff's Office for 3-1/2 years. He had served as a patrol deputy for only two months. Prior to becoming a patrol deputy, he worked as a school resource officer for Silo, Ok public schools. Sergeant Pace swerved to avoid a collision but struck the rear portion of the trailer. Sgt. Conrad served the city of Denison for over 20 years.
